Rock stars

The wind is still blowing

In the same trees as thirty years ago

And the people are still walking

On the same pavement as fifty years ago

But I’m not breathing

The same air as twenty years ago

And I’m not speaking

The same language as fifteen years ago

We grew up

Did you get what you dreamed of?

We used to want to be rock stars

Do you remember?

Now everyone I know

Are frequently having their own babies

It’s the natural law

But only for the married ladies

And I’m not one of those,

So where do I fit in?

Where do I go

When I don’t have my own family to be in?

We grew up

Did you get what you dreamed of?

We used to want to be rock stars

Like the ones on MTV

I was taught how to

Play the classical piano

I sang in a church

And I learned how to be a good girl

Blue shiny eye shadow and a nose piercing

Were my rebellion

A taste for boys made my father cry

But I didn’t ask his opinion

We grew up

Did you get what you dreamed of?

We used to want to be rock stars

Do you remember?

We grew up

Did you get what you dreamed of?

We used to want to be rock stars

Like the ones on MTV
